We start by getting the bed itself right: pull the weeds, cut a clean spade edge where the lawn meets the bed, and level what is already there. Then the mulch goes down in an even layer, deep enough to hold moisture and keep weeds down, kept clear of trunks and stems so nothing rots against the wood.
Fresh mulch is usually a spring job, but beds that look tired midsummer often just need a top-up and a re-edge. It is the fastest way to make the whole front of a house look kept, and it protects the plants while it does it.
